Uninor pledges support to Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Uninor-Prime-Minister-Swachh-Bharat-AbhiyanNew Delhi, India, December 15, 2014: Uninor, one of the fastest growing telecom companies in the country, has pledged support to Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.  As part of its commitment to the mission, the company has signed up to support the Varanasi city administration on the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by creating a blueprint for waste management across major public areas in the city and to generate public awareness of keeping the holy city clean.  The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Mr. Ram Gopal Mohle, Hon’ble Mayor, Varanasi Municipal Corporation and Mr. Rajiv Bawa, Chief Representative Officer, Telenor Group in the presence of His Excellency Eivind S Homme, Norweigian AMBASSADOR to the Republic of India and the Kingdom of Bhutan & Jinesh Hegde, Circle Business Head, UP East.

Announcing support to the drive, Rajiv Bawa, Chief Representative Officer, Telenor Group said, “Telenor and Uninor applaud the Prime Minister’s drive that will enable a healthy living standard across India. As a responsible corporate with a strong business interest in the holy city, Uninor is keen to work towards cleanliness and upkeep of Varanasi along with the city municipal corporation. As our high performing zone, Varanasi is significant to our business. We are developing a sustainable system that addresses the city’s waste management issue by creating public awareness and instilling the sense of ownership in keeping it clean.”

Uninor is the first corporate to partner with the city municipal corporation to adopt the cause and work towards deploying waste management system for the city, generate awareness and prepare a model that can be replicated across other parts of the country. The company will also be putting up public awareness messages across the city compelling people to keep the city clean. In addition, the company will be working with the city authorities to install 400 dustbins across the city and landscaping in certain areas in the city, making the city cleaner and greener.

It was here where the first call was tested for Uninor. It was also the first zone to cross the 1 million-subscriber mark way back in 2010. Uninor will also be extending its Swachh Bharat initiatives to the other circles. The company is working across cities on multiple initiatives like building toilets for girls in schools across UP West, Andhra Pradesh/Telengana and Maharastra. In Gujarat, Uninor has engaged in cleaning up cities and putting up dustbins in designated areas like vegetable markets.

‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign was officially launched on 2nd October 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi, where Prime Minister Modi cleaned the streets in Delhi. 3 million people – government employees, school and college students across India, joined him.
